Meet Jack Hubbard, our enthusiastic Data and Analytics Intern!

Jack is currently a rising junior at The University of Michigan, majoring in Economics and minoring in Data Science. His passion for understanding how data informs business decisions sparked his interest in digital advertising, where he is fascinated by optimizing marketing strategies and targeting specific audiences.

Learn more about Jack and his day-to-day adventures working at the intersection of product and engineering here at KORTX.

Tell us a little about yourself. What are you majoring in at school? What interests you about digital advertising?

I’m heading into my third year at The University of Michigan, pursuing a degree in Economics with a minor in Data Science.

My interest in various business sectors led me to choose Data Science as a minor, and I quickly realized the importance of an analytical perspective in informing business decisions. The combination of my studies in Economics and Data Science sparked my interest in digital advertising. I am fascinated by how data can be leveraged to optimize marketing decisions, target specific audiences, and ultimately drive measurable results for diverse businesses.

What team are you interning with, and what is your role?

I am a Data and Analytics Intern, working closely with the Product Solutions and Engineering teams. This role has been an awesome experience, allowing me to learn extensively about creating and maintaining KORTX’s proprietary software products. I sit in on meetings, collaborate with developers on the engineering team, and dive into the technical aspects of our products.

Working closely with the Product Solutions team has helped me understand the significant role these products play for both the KORTX team and our clients.

Can you describe a typical day or week as an intern at KORTX?

Sure! I come into the office every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. One of my favorite parts of the KORTX office is its collaborative environment. Despite the company being divided into teams, the open seating arrangement encourages communication and teamwork across departments, which has been incredibly valuable as an intern.

In the office, I have my own desk where I start my day working on my computer. I attend the development team's daily stand-up meetings, learn about new updates implemented into KORTX products like Kampus and Blueprint, and track the team's progress on their quarterly goals.

Lunchtime often involves joining colleagues at local restaurants. In the afternoon, I meet with colleagues from various departments, gaining insights into their roles and updating my team on my projects. I wrap up my day at my desk and occasionally participate in company social events after work!

What has been the most surprising or rewarding part of your internship at KORTX so far?

The most rewarding part has been witnessing how KORTX operates and the various opportunities with this unique approach. From my first day, I could sense the strong community aspect within the company.

KORTX encourages all employees to collaborate and learn about all facets of the business, beyond their specific roles. The environment has allowed me to explore and learn about different areas of interest within KORTX beyond my initial role.

I've attended Lunch & Learns on diverse topics, heard updates from each department at monthly company-wide meetings, and gained a comprehensive understanding of the company.

This holistic approach to business operations has significantly expanded my knowledge and demonstrated the benefits of an inclusive and collaborative company culture that I will carry into my future career.

What advice would you give someone considering an internship at KORTX or anywhere else?

The opportunity to translate your education into real-world experience through an internship is invaluable for both your growth as a student and as someone transitioning into a future career.

I highly recommend anyone considering an internship at KORTX or elsewhere to take that opportunity. Approach the internship with a mindset of curiosity and eagerness to learn. There is so much to learn within a company beyond your direct role, and being curious will allow you to gain the greatest value from the experience.

Is there a specific project you've been working on that you're particularly excited about? Tell us a bit about it!

Yes! I have been working with the Product Solutions team to implement a standardized KPI objective field for KORTX campaigns. This project involved reviewing and categorizing data from around three years of KORTX campaigns..

Previously, the KORTX system did not have a standardized KPI objective field, so the company couldn’t easily gain insights into campaign benchmark values. By sorting this historical data and implementing a standardized KPI objective field for future campaigns, the KPI values can now be used as benchmarks for campaign success and to inform future strategies.

What are your future career goals and how does this internship fit into your future plan?

Although I do not have my future laid out yet, the skills and experiences I have developed at KORTX will play an important role in whatever I eventually decide to pursue. The University of Michigan offers strong opportunities in the financial sector, which I hope to get involved with next summer.

My time at KORTX has given me a strong foundation in data analysis, campaign management, and strategic thinking. These transferable skills are valuable in many aspects of business, including finance, where data-driven decision-making is becoming increasingly important.

Ultimately, my internship at KORTX has given me a practical understanding of utilizing data to achieve business goals, which will undoubtedly be beneficial as I pursue future opportunities in the business world.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

Outside of work, I really enjoy golfing with my friends. Despite being terrible at the sport for many years, I have finally started to see some improvements in my game this summer, and now I'm hooked!
